Heart & Stroke courses
BLS, the resuscitation course for healthcare settings — and why its card is renewed every year.
The organization is the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, known publicly as Heart & Stroke. We are not it; the platform lists sessions run by training organizations that deliver its certifications. What follows comes from its own pages, read on 20 September 2026.
What this body certifies
- BLS — Basic Life Support
- The foundational course for healthcare settings. For care providers, trained first responders and healthcare students.
- ACLS — Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
- The level above, with a variant for experienced providers.
- First aid
- Certifying first aid courses for medical emergencies.
- CardiakXpress
- A short resuscitation awareness format for the general public.
Who BLS is for
Heart & Stroke presents BLS as the foundational life-saving course in Canada. It targets pre-hospital and hospital settings, and emphasizes high-quality CPR and team dynamics. It leads to a certificate the organization describes as nationally recognized, offered in blended or instructor-led format.
- Healthcare providers.
- Trained first responders.
- Students enrolled in a healthcare training program.
One year — and that is the real difference
This is what surprises people comparing certifying bodies: the BLS certificate is valid for one year. A Red Cross CPR card lasts three. It is not a matter of strictness but of audience: BLS is for people who resuscitate as part of their job, and whose skills are expected to stay fresh.
In practice: if your employer requires BLS, plan for a yearly appointment, not a three-year one.
BLS, SIR, SVR: three names, one level
Heart & Stroke’s SIR, the Red Cross SVR and the English acronym BLS describe the same level of competence in three different programs. An employer writing “BLS” in a job posting is describing a level, not naming a program. Check which one they accept before booking.
What Heart & Stroke does not decide
Like any certifying body, it issues a certificate; it does not decide whether your employer, your professional order or CNESST accept it. Those requirements are set by them, not by it.

FAQ
One year, according to Heart & Stroke. That is much shorter than a general-public CPR card, usually three years — BLS is for people who resuscitate as part of their work.
Both cover the same level of competence: BLS is the Heart & Stroke program, SVR the Red Cross one. Your employer or professional order says which they accept.
It is not designed for it. Heart & Stroke intends it for healthcare settings. For a parent or an individual, a CPR/AED or standard first aid course fits better, and its card lasts three years.
In blended format: part online, practice in person. Heart & Stroke also offers a fully instructor-led format.
