What changes the price
Duration, first of all
This is what explains most of the gap. A few hours of CPR/AED and a 16-hour standard first aid course do not serve the same need and do not cost the same. Before comparing two prices, make sure you are comparing two courses of the same length.
The certifying body
The card you receive comes from the organization that accredits the course, not from the instructor. A widely recognized certification sometimes costs a little more than a local attestation — the right choice depends on what your employer requires.
The format
Some courses combine online theory with in-person practice. The practical part cannot be cut: skills are assessed on a manikin, in person. A course advertised as fully online usually does not carry the same recognition.
Renewal
Many providers offer a shorter format to people who are already certified, cheaper than an initial course. It generally requires that your previous certification has not expired: renewing on time costs less than starting over.
Comparing two prices properly
- Duration and level (CPR alone, or first aid including CPR).
- The body issuing the certification, and whether your employer recognizes it.
- How long the card stays valid — a three-year certification and a one-year one are not the same purchase.
- What is included: manual, card, retake if you fail.
- Location and date: a day of travel has a cost too.
Who should pay?
When the training is required by the job — designated workplace first aider, childcare educator — the employer normally covers it, like any other requirement attached to the position.
