Workplace first aid: what the CNESST regulation requires

Since 2026, a new regulation governs workplace first aid in Quebec. Number of first aiders, training length, kits: the essentials for employers.

Workplace first aid is governed by CNESST. Since the Regulation respecting minimum standards for first aid and first aid kits (RNMPSPS) came into force on February 12, 2026, several requirements have been clarified.

The required training

The workplace first-aider course lasts 16 hours and must be delivered by a recognized provider. The certification is generally valid for 3 years.

How many first aiders are needed?

The number of first aiders required depends on the number of workers present at the same time and the establishment’s risk level. The employer must ensure a qualified first aider is available at all times during working hours.

First aid kits

The contents and number of kits must comply with the CSA Z1220-2024 standard. They must be easily accessible and clearly identified.

What employers should remember

  • Train enough first aiders for the workforce present.
  • Keep certifications current (renew every 3 years).
  • Provide compliant, accessible kits.
